Dictionary definition of "mission":- 'an important assignment carried out for political, religious or commercial purposes, typically involving travel abroad.'
It's interesting that people associate mission with travelling abroad. Obviously missionary work abroad is essential, but mission is just as important on our own doorsteps. Here's where cYo comes in...
The Big Step
Held annually since 2000, The Big Step exists to provide continuity from Primary to Secondary School. The Secondary Schools Workers join Primary Schools Workers on their turf to take special assemblies to Year 6 students. They are provided with a Scripture Union book called "It's Your Move", and help answer questions & allay any fears to do with moving up to Secondary School. This project has received great respect from both Primary & Secondary Schools and helps provide familiar faces for when the small fish enter their big ponds!
Mission Weeks
The aim of our Mission Weeks is to work extensively in two or three Secondary Schools for five days or more. Assemblies, RE Lessons, Social Education Classes, Lunch Clubs, Concerts, Workshops and After-School Events are all activities that take place during the week, and enable us to present Christianity in as many ways as possible. Who's US? We always invite a particular group to work with us, and new faces seem to have a good impact during the week as well. In the past, we have hosted Riding Lights Roughshod, Tomorrow's Girl (T-Girl), Tsunami, Doug Ross, The PAIS Project, KATO, Youth for Christ and others.
To round off the week, a gig is often organised at a local venue, in which the students can attend an evening full of club music, bands, supporting artists and DJs. They have always been successful, well-organised events and appear to round the week off well. During the evening also, a few minutes are set aside to talk about Christ and share what the week has meant to cYo. There aren't any altar calls or anything like that, just a reminder as to what the week has been all about.
